A sub-inspector of Hatirjheel Police Station and two others were sued today for extorting Tk 1 lakh from a man earlier this month.
The accused are SI Mohammad Zahid Hossain, Ayesha Ruby and her husband Jasimuddin Rayat.
Azad Mahbub, a resident of Rampura, filed the case with the Court of Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashek Imam against the three.
After the hearing, the magistrate recorded statement of the complainant and ordered Police Bureau of Investigation to look into the matter and submit a probe report by August 28.
In his complaint, Azad mentioned that he was in a relationship with Ruby before she got married to Rayat.
She had some “indecent” photographs with Azad and tried to blackmail him with those. The couple filed several general diaries against Azad with different police stations for that purpose, but withdrew those after settling the issues out of court, according to the case statement.
On July 10, Ruby informed the complainant that her mother-in-law suffered a stroke and she wanted help from him.Azad then met Rayat at a restaurant at Moghbazar at 9:30pm on that day. But SI Zahid picked him up and took him to Hatirjheel Police Station, the statement added.
The SI then contacted Azad’s relatives over phone and demanded Tk 3 lakh for his release, failing which Azad would be implicated in a murder case.
One of the relatives went to the police station where Zahid forced him to give Tk 1,00,000 as extortion, the case statement said.
