Sathosa DGM arrested & remanded; Court orders return of Garlic consignment

COLOMBO (News 1st); The Deputy General Manager (Finance) of Lanka Sathosa Limited was remanded until the 21st of September, for his role in the #GarlicScam.

He was arrested by the Peliyagoda Police on Thursday (16) and produced to the Welisara Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect is charges with selling 54,860 kilograms of Garlic owned by Lanka Sathosa Limited to a businessman.

Detective said that the stock of garlic valued at Rs. 7.4 Mn, imported to the country via a cabinet decision, was taken out of the Colombo Port, the very moment it was imported.

The suspect had sold a kilogram of garlic to the businessman for Rs. 135/-, however, at that time the price per kilogram of garlic in the Lanka Sathosa Database was listed at Rs. 355/-.

Sri Lanka Police said the suspect had issued a letter to Lanka Sathosa Limited employees to amend the price to Rs. 135/-.

The suspect was arrested on the charges of criminal breach of trust, concealing information and unlawful release of goods among others.

Court ordered for the stock of garlic that was sold at a lower price, to be returned to Lanka Sathosa Limited.
