Representatives from Hindu and Muslim groups in Lancashire have come together to share a message of ‘peace and harmony’.

The meeting organised by Light Foundation came in the wake of the violent clashes, provocation and religious tensions in Leicester and Birmingham in recent weeks.

Leaders from Hindu and Muslim communities joined senior police officers and civic leaders in Preston to present a united-front as they appealed for ‘continued calm and respectful dialogue’.

Nadeem Ashfaq of the Light Foundation said: “The meeting highlighted the positive relationships and goodwill which Hindu and Muslim communities have enjoyed for decades in this country.

“There was also a strong resolve to counter any extreme and hateful narratives being promoted to divide both communities.

“Participants called on the importance of strong interfaith relations between grassroots Hindu and Muslim communities, in a search of renewed spirit of common humanity.

“We also emphasised the importance of respecting the sanctity of religious places, both mosques and temples alike.”
