Bollywood has been churning out films after films. In the recent past, many new projects have seen the light of the day, but not all have been loved by the masses. While there was once a time when the star power would attract major crowds to cinema halls, times have now changed – and for the better. More and more people are starting to call out weak storylines and problematic plots when it comes to films, becoming more informed. Likewise, a number of films released in Bollywood over the past decade, and we’ve jotted down some of the worst of the lot. Have a read through the list to find out what these are. You’ll be surprised at the cast of these films.

1. Jab Tak Hai Jaan

Starring superstars Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is a romantic drama film released in 2012. Shah Rukh plays Samar Anand, a bomb disposal expert whose diary falls into the hands of an intern played by Anushka named Akira. The diary recounts his time as a struggling immigrant in London which also details his whirlwind romance with Meera, played by Katrina. The story of the film revolves around Samar and Meera falling in love, but due to some sort of bad luck Meera feels they can never be together. This prompts Samar to always play against death which he managed to defeat every single time. During this time away from Meera, Samar meets Akira who also falls in love with him – creating a love triangle of all sorts. No surprises there, however, the plot of the entire film was weak. While the film was a success at the box office and did manage to earn a few rewards, but that is only probably because it had some of the biggest stars of Bollywood. The film also marked Yash Chopra’s return to direction after 8 years and was his last film before his death.

2. Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3 was released in 2012 as an action thriller starring Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra in lead roles. It is also the third installment of the Dhoom series and the sequel to the 2004 and 2006’s sequels. The film sees Abhishek and Uday reprise their roles as Jai and Ali, respectively whereas Aamir Sahir Khan. Dhoom 3 was one of the most expensive Bollywood films ever made and was the first one to have been released on the IMAX format. 23 years after his father is unable to repay the loans of his circus, Sahir robs various branches of Western Bank of Chicago. Despite all efforts of law enforcement, Sahir successfully gets away. Jai and Ali are called in to help solve the case as Sahir poses as an informant of Jai instead and leaves them hanging, and at fault. Upon encountering Sahir, Jai and Ali shoot him in the back but once found, they are unable to locate the gun-shot wound. This is when they find out that Sahir has an autistic twin brother, Samar – who is not only helping Sahir pull of insane magic tricks, but is also a part of the robbery. At this point, whether Sahir gets caught or not is not the question, but the fact that the climax of the film was rather boring and expected. While the film earned a whopping INR 4 billion and the 11th highest grossing Bollywood film of all time, it was one of the worst installments of the Dhoom franchise. And let’s not forget Katrina serving as just a pretty face and a dancing acrobat named Aaliya without much material given to her to work with.

3. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was release in 2016 starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Fawad Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan with a cameo by Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt. The film revolves around the concept of unrequited, receiving mixed reviews. Ranbir plays Ayan, a man child obsessed with the idea of love and lust – two things he cannot differentiate between. He meets Anushka’s character Alizeh and keeps telling her that he is in love with her, while Alizeh keeps telling him she’s not interested. Ring a bell ladies? Adamant on getting into a relationship with her, Ayan doesn’t understand that Alizeh only wants to be friends with him, and they soon part ways. He then meets Saba, played by Aishwarya, and tries to make Alizeh jealous by telling her that he’s in a relationship with Saba. Soon after, they part ways again, only for them to reunite when Ayan finds out that Alizeh only has a few days left to live as she is suffering from cancer. Now isn’t that a cliché? Not only the storyline, but the fact that a grown man refuses to take no for an answer and continues to annoy the girl he likes, is something that exists in our society and is very problematic. Instead of shaming that notion, the film only promotes it making it one of the worst Bollywood films ever.

4. Kabir Singh

It seems like no matter what, not enough has been said about Shahid Kapoor’s Kabir Singh, which released earlier this year. Kabir Singh is a remake of a Telugu film named Arjun Reddy wherein Shahid plays Kabir Singh, a surgeon who spirals into self-destruction when his girlfriend, Preeti – essayed by Kiara Advani – leaves him. It received mixed reviews as many said that it was glamorising misogyny and toxic masculinity. Upon such response, Shahid defended his character which was not well-received by the audiences. With content now becoming more and more relevant, audiences are now opting for more sensible and valuable material instead of going ahead with problematic notions that a lot of A-listers’ films have done so in the past. While the film was a commercial success worldwide and Shahid was lauded for his performance, it didn’t seem to have been digested well by many.

5. Zero

It seems like the trio of Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma isn’t too fruitful. Directed by Anand L Rai, the film follows Bauua Singh – a dwarf played by Shah Rukh – who is facing difficulty finding a marriage partner. He eventually finds a companion in Aafia Bhinder who is a successful scientist with cerebral palsy – essayed by Anushka. But things take a turn when film superstar Babita – played by Katrina – gets close to him. The film marked Shah Rukh’s most expensive project to date but was a commercial flop. Zero didn’t fare well at the box office and was not loved by fans either, proving to be a sad 2018 for Shah Rukh. Ever since, the actor hasn’t been seen in any film and Zero could easily be deemed as the superstar’s biggest failure to date. The storyline wasn’t interesting at all and neither were Shah Rukh and Anushka’s performances. Only Katrina seemed to emerge victorious from Zero as she proved her abilities as an A-class actress.

With the audiences getting more and more educated, it’s great that many are now starting to call out problematic concepts when it comes to a film’s storyline. The likes of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Kabir Singh, were rightfully criticized for promoting stalking and misogyny, something that films should actually stay away from. So while there were many good films released in the past decade, there were some which were downright horrible. We hope you never wasted your time watching them, because we definitely did.
