A central leader of Hefajat-e Islam was critically injured after being stabbed by an unidentified assailant in Dhaka’s Lalbagh area yesterday evening.
Maulana Jasim Uddin, assistant secretary general of Hefajat, was receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for wounds on his back.
Maulana Zubayer Ahmad, assistant secretary general of Hefajat-e-Islam and Jasim Uddin’s brother-in-law told Bangla daily Prothom Alo that Jasim Uddin was first taken to DMCH. From there, he was moved to a private hospital and then later he was brought back and admitted to DMCH.
Dr Alauddin, resident medical officer of the hospital’s emergency department, said the condition of the patient is critical and he is being given blood.
Maulana Jasim is a senior teacher of Jamia Qurania Arabia madrasa in Lalbagh and son-in-law of Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini.
Aslam Mollah, inspector (operations) of Lalbagh Police Station said they came to know about the incident and were trying to identify the attacker by collecting CCTV footage.
Md Salaullah, a student of the madrasa, said Maulana Jasim was heading towards his Lalmatia residence on a rickshaw from the madrasa around 5:00pm. An unidentified man then stabbed him from behind while the rickshaw was in motion.
Madrasa students came to know about the incident and rushed him to the hospital. The attacker fled immediately.
