The Land Rover Defender family is showcasing its 21st century dual eSIM connectivity at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020, in Las Vegas, being held from 7-10 January. Defender 110 and 90 are being featured at the world’s biggest consumer electronics show. New Defender is the first car to make use of the latest-generation technology. It has two embedded LTE modems for enhanced connectivity while Jaguar Land Rover’s new Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment, in a cutting-edge design, has the same processing hardware as the latest smartphones. Defender has the capability to download Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) updates on the go without interruption, while using apps simultaneously through its Pivi Pro infotainment
Director of Connected Car and Future Technology, Jaguar Land Rover, Peter Virk said, “With one LTE modem and eSIM dedicated to the Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) technology and the same set-up looking after apps, New Defender has the digital capacity to keep customers connected, updated and entertained at all times anywhere in the world. You could liken the design to a brain, with each half enjoying its own connection for unrivalled and uninterrupted service. Like the brain, one side of the system looks after logical functions, like SOTA, while the other takes care of more creative tasks.”
The Pivi Pro set-up, at the centre of New Defender’s cabin, will always be switched on and connected as it has its own battery. The navigation will accept new destinations as soon the driver sits in the car. Customers can use its 10-inch high-resolution touchscreen to control all aspects of the car and can also download software updates, including map data. They can also connect two mobile devices to the infotainment head unit via Bluetooth, at the same time, so both the driver and the passenger can use the hands-free functionality concurrently.
