Cyclone Amphan: Great danger signal 10 at Mongla, Payra ports

Mongla and Payra maritime ports and nearby coastal districts have been advised to hoist great danger signal number 10 as super cyclone Amphan is heading towards Bangladesh and set to make landfall this evening.

The Met office also asked that danger signal number six remain hoisted at Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar maritime ports.

The   cyclone ‘Amphan’ over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining northeast and west-central Bay moved north-northeastwards and lies over the same area, according to the special bulletin of Bangladesh Meteorological Department.

At 6:00am today, it was situated about 565km southwest of Chattogram port, 545km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, 390km southwest of Mongla port and 410km southwest  of Payra port. 

It is likely to move in a north-northeasterly direction and may cross the West Bengal/Bangladesh coast near the Sundarbans during this afternoon/evening.

Maximum sustained wind speed within 85kms of the cyclone centre is about 200kph rising to 220kph in gusts/squalls.

The sea will remain very high near the cyclone centre.

Warning Signal: Maritime ports of Mongla and Payra have been advised to take down danger signal number seven and instead hoist great danger signal number 10.

Coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur,  Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur and their offshore islands and chars will come under great danger signal number 10.

Maritime ports of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar have been advised to keep hoisted danger signal number six.

Coastal districts of Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar their offshore islands and chars will come under danger signal number six.

Storm Surge Warning: Under the influence of the cyclone and the end day of last quarter moon, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal,Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram and their offshore  islands  and chars are likely to be inundated by storm surge of 10-15 feet height above normal tide.

Wind Warning: The coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagherhat, Jhalakathi, Pirojpur, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram  and their offshore islands and chars are likely to experience wind speed up to 140-160 kph in gusts/squalls with heavy to very heavy falls during the passage of the cyclone.

Fishermen Warning: All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay and deep sea have been advised to take shelter immediately and will remain in shelter till further notice.
