BNP MPs’ resignation: EC to announce date of by-polls on Sunday

The Election Commission will announce on Sunday the schedule for by-elections to the parliamentary seats that fell vacant following the resignation of the BNP lawmakers.

Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said this while talking to journalists at the Election Commission office at Agargaon in Dhaka today.

“We have a meeting on Sunday. We will discuss the by-polls there. The date of the by-polls will be announced after the meeting,” said Alamgir.

Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) will be used in the polls. The issue of installing CCTV cameras at polling centres will also be discussed at the meeting, he said.

On December 10, the BNP lawmakers announced that they would resign from parliament.

The following day, five of the seven BNP lawmakers submitted their resignation to Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

The five MPs are Md Zahidur Rahman, Thakurgaon-3; Md Mosharof Hosen, Bogura-4; Gulam Mohammad Siraj, Bogura-6; Md Aminul Islam, Chapainawabganj-2 and Rumeen Farhana from a seat reserved for women.
