COLOMBO(News 1st): The Human Rights High Commissioner’s report on Sri Lanka for the 46th session of the Human Rights Council has recommended asset freezes and travel bans against those who have been credibly alleged to have committed war crimes in Sri Lanka.
The report of the Human Rights High Commissioners due to be submitted at the 46th session of the Human Rights Council points out that Sri Lanka has failed repeatedly in producing results through domestic initiatives of accountability and reconciliation for nearly 12 years since the end of the war.
Countries could apply targetted sanctions, such as asset freezes and travel bans against state officials and other actors credibly alleged to have committed grave human rights violations in Sri Lanka, the report states.
Member states could actively pursue investigations and prosecutions of international crimes committed by all parties in Sri Lanka before the national courts of their respective countries, it further added.
This report will be tabled at the 46th session of the Human Rights Council which will be held from the 22nd of February to the 19th of March.
