- Nine star hit by another banner gag
- Bombers in disarray
Welcome to AFL Sunday, our live coverage of today’s games.
North Melbourne and Gold Coast are both looking for their first wins of the season as Round 2 of the AFL continues today.
The Kangaroos face Brisbane after the Lions shocked reigning premiers West Coast in Round 1 while the Suns take on Fremantle, who are fresh off a big win over the Roos.
Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs play each other at the MCG after both sides enjoyed victories last weekend.

Western Bulldogs nab phenomenal record win
“Tell me how that’s a f***ing push?”
That was an irate James Sicily losing it at an AFL umpire when perhaps the combustible Hawthorn star should have been asking ‘how did we lose this game?’
The Hawks were up by 30 points at three-quarter time when Jack Gunston kicked his third just before the siren but from there the Bulldogs found their bite and inflicted an unwanted record on this Hawthorn team, who gave up a record fourth quarter lead under coach Alastair Clarkson when they blew it — the previous biggest being losing from 19 points up to Geelong in round 17, 2009.
But rather than roll over in the fourth after the Hawks made all the play in the third the Bulldogs bit back … hard.
Billy Gowers kicked the opener of the term before Gunston answered back fot the Dogs and from their they kept kicking them — eight straight in fact, with three of Josh Schache’s four coming in the final term rout.
Star onballer Jack Macrae pulled the Dogs level on the 22 minute mark of the final term as a result of a centre square infringement as James Worpel ran through the circle as the umpire was ready to bounce.
Schache then kicked them clear after Sicily was penalised for hitting Schache in the chest before the bounce in what was a contentious call.
Schache duly converted.
But the commentators were not convinced of the call one saying, “I’m not sure I like that one.”
From there the Dogs kept coming and in a feel good moment Tom Liberatore snapped truly for the sealer before when the game was all but over Sicily snapped when he had a free kick paid against him for front-on contact on Gowers, who would go on to kick the goal.
“Tell me how it’s a f***ing push?”
“I punched the ball.”
Sicily continued to go on with it before his teammates eventually got him to walk away from the umpire.

Sunny days on the Goldy
Alex Sexton was so nearly the hero for Gold Coast in round one and he has again come to the fore in round two, kicking three goals in the half as Gold Coast lead Fremantle by three points at halftime.
The Suns have managed to apply pressure around the ball that has not allowed the Dockers to easily get the ball into their forward line quickly, as they did last week when they flogged North Melbourne.

Champion Data melts down and so do fantasy fans
With hundreds of thousands of Aussies playing Fantasy AFL or Supercoach the weekend is not a good time for the number one feed provider to have their servers crash but that is what seems to have happened.
AFL stats across the board are down and fantasy players are blowing up deluxe across social media, wanting to know did Lachie Neale crack a record after being well over 100 points at three-quarter time?
@supercoachjords Champion Data has crashed. All today’s SC Scores haven’t updated. Neale might have scored around 170 maybe even 180

Are they winning their overly tight fantasy league matches. Are Gold Coast really level with the Freo Dockers, and how?
The AFL pointed to the issue being with Champion Data too.
UPDATE: The issue is with the Champion Data server. They are currently investigating the root cause.

And as is usually the case punters took to social media and dished out some rather hilarious memes and comments. Below are some of the best.
I can neither confirm nor deny that I plunged a screwdriver into the Champion Data mainframe upon seeing Daniel Rich’s three-quarter-time score.

Young Suns having a crack as Hawks flex muscles
Fremantle were the talk of the AFL last weekend after their demolition of North Melbourne but maybe the exposed form isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Or maybe the young Gold Coast Suns actually aren’t too bad.
Playing in their home opener for the 2019 season, the Suns, who endured a heartbreaking one-point loss to the Saints in round one lead the Dockers by one point at the opening break.
They will have to watch out for gun Fremantle mid Nat Fyfe though as he’s starting to influence the contest heavily.
Back at the MCG the Hawks flexed their ample muscles in the third term with both Jack Gunston and Jarryd Roughead hitting the scoresheet as they kicked away to a 30-point three-quarter time lead over the Western Bulldogs.

Hawks and Dogs battling the conditions
It has been windy and wet as the Hawks and Western Bulldogs fight out a tight battle at the MCG.
And while the Hawks kicked back to be within a goal at halftime thanks to Paul Puopolo it has been all the Bulldogs in the second term.
It was also a former Hawk doing the damage with Matthew Suckling wreaking havoc off of halfback.
While for Hawthorn Jaeger O’Meara has been among their best players on the park.

Brisbane go 2-0 against Roos
Emerging Brisbane have kicked six of the last seven goals to beat North Melbourne by 20 points in their AFL clash at Marvel Stadium. After last week’s upset success over reigning premiers West Coast, the Lions impressed again onSunday with their 16.11 (107) to 13.9 (87) win over the Kangaroos.
It breaks Brisbane’s five-game losing streak at the venue and also ends their run of six losses to North.
Star midfield recruit Lachie Neale led the way for Brisbane with 42 disposals — 11 of them in the last quarter.
Brisbane won the centre clearances 8-3 in the final term and Neale had four of them.
Neale was neck-and-neck with North star Shaun Higgins for best-afield honours but the former Fremantle onballer’s final term was the clincher. Charlie Cameron kicked four goals for the Lions, two of them in the last term, after he was well held early by Marley Williams.
Ben Brown kicked three for the Kangaroos.
North twice broke out to game-high leads, by 20 points at the start of the second term and 22 midway through the third.
But the Lions counterattacked immediately to keep the game tight. Brisbane ruck-forward Oscar McInerney had an outstanding cameo in the third term when North looked ready to bust the game open.
He took three big marks in quick succession and kicked 2.1 to put the Lions back in the contest.
The Lions finished off the third quarter with two more goals to lead by two points.
It was the first time they had been in front since the opening five minutes of the game.
Goals to Ben Cunnington and captain Jack Ziebell put North in front by 10 points.
The Lions hit back through Hugh McCluggage, Lincoln McCarthy and Mitch Robinson to go eight points ahead.
Cunnington found Western Bulldogs recruit Tom Campbell on his own and the goal reduced the margin to two points, but Cameron’sthird goal gave the Lions breathing space.
A juggled mark to Lincoln McCarthy and his second goal of the final term was the nail in the coffin.

Banner trolls keep coming
Host of the Channel 9 Sunday Footy Show Tony Jones keeps getting targeted by his colleagues on air.
The man known as “Chompers” — a reference to the size of his teeth — is a regular punching bag on the program and the rest of the panel had another laugh at his expense when they brought up an awkward moment from his past.
Some creative editing saw the panel come up with a banner that read: “Many sleepless nights since that infamous miss, when Chompers approached Bec and left without a kiss.”
The gag was a reference to Jones being snubbed by AFL legend Chris Judd’s wife Bec when he went for a peck on the cheek live on air during the Channel 9 news a few years ago.
“Are you serious,” Jones said. “It’s not ‘not bad’ at all. It’s not (funny).”
The latest take-down comes hot on the heels of last week’s program when Kane Cornes roasted Jones.

Bombers cop plenty of boos
Essendon tackle machine Devon Smith has shrugged off the Bombers boo-boys, dismissing the poor support as no different to his days at GWS.
The Bombers’ sloppy loss to St Kilda on Saturday night continued their winless start to the campaign and sets up a must-win match on Friday night against Melbourne.
Defeat to the Demons would be just the second time in the Bombers’ 122-year history, and first time since 1967, they’ve lost their opening three games of the season.
Smith and his teammates were booed at several points of Saturday afternoon’s loss to the Saints, most vociferously at quarter-time.
At full-time, the Bombers fans that stayed for the final siren went again.
“I’m pretty used to it, playing at the Giants,” Smith told AAP. “I don’t think we had too many cheers there. It’s not something I notice too much.”
Smith’s sledge shows the combative midfielder isn’t backing down on tough talk on his former home; last week he declared Giants Stadium a “graveyard”. He wasn’t as jocular on Essendon’s performance against the Saints though insisted there were upsides from the 11-point loss.
“Our effort and energy was there. So that’s a positive,” he said. “A lot of it was in our control we just didn’t execute going forward.
“I thought some individuals stepped up in the second half including our skipper but we need more players jumping on board.
“We’ve just got to kick goals, get the belief going in the front half.
“Just be smarter with the football, I’m not too sure what the inside 50s were, I felt we like had our fair share but we butchered it a bit going forward, including myself.”
Smith had 19 touches, seven tackles and five inside-50s in the loss. Captain Dyson Heppell had just seven disposals to halftime, often starting on the wing, but exploded with 10 possessions in the third term as Essendon launched a comeback.
Coach John Worsfold said he would mull the best use of his on-field leader against the Demons.
“If Dyson goes in and gets among it he pushes someone out. We’re always looking at the balance,” he said.
“The midfield group, led by our coaching group and the players, will talk about what the best mix was around the ball.”
Like Smith, the premiership-winning coach wanted to focus on the positives.
“We’re 0-2 and have a big game against Melbourne which we’re really excited about taking on,” he said.
