Until last week, Iqra Aziz was making headlines for her stunning wedding pictures and videos. The actress tied the knot with her fellow co-star Yasir Hussain in an intimate ceremony on December 28th, 2019. Known for her stellar acting prowess, Iqra Aziz has bagged numerous awards for her performances in shows such as Suno Chanda and Ranjha Ranjha Kardi. A few weeks ago, Iqra Aziz shared a picture from her upcoming project. The actress also shared that it will be the first project she will be sharing the screen space with her then-fiancee, Yasir Hussain. Now, the first teaser of the aforementioned show, titled Jhooti, has been released.
Apparent Plot:
Yet to be aired on ARY Digital, the platform released two teasers of the show which also stars Ahmed Ali Butt. Jhooti revolves around Iqra Aziz’s character who is adamant to not marry Ahmed Ali Butt due to his weak financial status. The second teaser sees Iqra Aziz faking domestic abuse. Social media users criticised the producers and actors of the show for trivialising the matter at hand.
The Backlash:
The Twitter users slammed the TV show and this is what they had to say:
Who is the audience for a drama like this?
Is it women in abusive relationships who will see this character & her deception as heroic?
Is it abusive husbands who will have their misogyny validated?I mean you can only like this if you are in someway emotionally struggling https://t.co/7uwz57tK5K

I’m disgusted!! Absolutely disgusted. Women are a victim of abuse and violence every single day in this country & our mainstream dramas are only trying to portray them as liars. Ughhh https://t.co/8KTgWORkE9

Women are already facing so many problems in our society and then this happens?? Utter disgrace! This show will give justification to the abusers and implies that women lie about domestic abuse. This show should not be allowed to air !! https://t.co/Rl3mtTn1sm

Another one called out the show to not be aired entirely. “Women are already facing so many problems in our society and then this happens?? Utter disgrace! This show will give justification to the abusers and implies that women lie about domestic abuse. This show should not be allowed to air!”
ARY should go out of business. Stop producing such pathetic television. The narratives are the same—women are always, will always, be evil (the alternative: Pious Passive Mute). Men will always just…be men, even when they are evident abusers. No alternative. https://t.co/j0TNnAhdel

Do we need more cultural abuse of women? More strengthening of abusive stereotypes such as perpetual liars? Then we wonder why violence against women doesn’t end and why no one believes women when they report abuse.
Should we “change the channel” here too? https://t.co/DdsvJbvVIH— Meraj Hasan (@_merajhasan) January 5, 2020
One user wrote how women are rarely believed when they report abuse. “Do we need more cultural abuse of women? More strengthening of abusive stereotypes such as perpetual liars? These far from real events, Pakistani serials, reek of patriarchal norms & sing of the ire of men. As someone who has witnessed domestic abuse this is disgusting. Denial of a taboo that is destroying our families & has made marriage a nightmare for our generation. Absolute shame. https://t.co/5GAsdo1wKE

More to the Story:
Others hoped there is more to the tv show than what it shows in the teaser.
Based on this promo, I think it’s going to focus on those 1% women who actually fakes domestic abuse ! But, this show is just going to poison the minds of Desi families who already thinks are women are overreacting and faking it !So, it is going to make things tough for the rest https://t.co/BA8zMFwUvz
