As the year comes to a close, it’s time to take stock of everything that went down in 2019; sartorially speaking. From the statement hairclip overload, to neon on every ramp, to square-toed heels; 2019 was host to a number of different trends and fashion statements. Power suits continued to reign supreme in 2019 and neon decided to stick around. We saw lots of unique accessories for the hair and belted bags and fanny packs were done to death. Chunky sneakers most certainly had their fair share of time on the fashion scene and biker shorts were also around for a short while. With that being said, and with 2020 around the corner, it’s time we look forward to the New Year and analyse the trends we need to bid farewell to in 2020.

1.      Slogan Hair Clips

While these had a major moment in the year gone by, we really need to bid farewell to these encrusted slogan hair clips. From pearls, to diamontes to the oversized resin hair clips, these were most certainly all the rage in 2019. But we think the trend is more than over done now and it really needs to come to an end. The year 2020 will bring with it a new retro replacement for these hair accessories.

2.      Biker Shorts

The second half of the year saw the biker shorts gaining much recognition. The biker short is heavily influenced by Princess Diana’s sartorial style and was sported throughout the year by celebrities including the likes of Kendall Jenner, Rihanna and Beyonce. They were also sported by every Victoria’s Secret model in abundance and gained quite a bit of traction. While they may be super comfortable and make somewhat of a style statement, the biker shorts need to go and never be seen again.

3.      PVC and Perspex shoes

PVC bags

Carrying a PVC bag or shoes in 2019 means you are a brave soul and okay to bare it all. With all your personal belongings on display, PVC bags and shoes especially were really having a moment in 2019. PVC wasn’t just restricted to bags and shoes but also to clothes, accessories and hats. Get ready to bid farewell to the trend and welcome back your privacy as this trend is on its way out in the new year.

4.      Chunky Sneakers

Sneakers

Not just us, but the whole fashion scene is just so over these chunky sneakers which were all the rage this year. If there was only one trend we had to get rid of in 2020, it would most certainly be the chunky sneakers. From exaggerated platforms, to bold colours, to thick tongues, we wonder how these even became a trend in the first place. *Eyeroll*

5.      Off-White Belts

If you’re into fashion, chances are you’ve seen these fabric off-white belts..about 100 times. While they gave quite an edgy look to your ensemble they don’t really serve any purpose and have no practicality. The year 2020 should be about using belts for their actual purpose as opposed to wearing them for the brand.

6.      Fanny Packs

Fanny Packs

Okay, we get it! These are comfortable, they’re practical and they’re big enough to carry all your essentials for the day. But do we really need to see more of them in 2020? We think not. Ever since the fanny pack rose to fame, it has been done to death. From bright bold coloured ones, to sleek black ones, both high-end designers and high street brands showcased fanny packs in a big way and before we get really over it, it’s time the trend fizzles out.

With that being said, it’s time to take note of what’s in your closet and revamp your existing pieces for the upcoming season. Look forward to the new year which is all set to bring with it a whole host of new trends and fashionable accessories. Here’s to ditching the old and bringing in the new!
