War crimes accused Shah Newaz dies at DMCH

An incarcerated war crimes accused died yesterday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The deceased Shah Newaz (95) was a resident of Durgapur upazila in Netrokona.

Enamul, a jail guard of Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj, said Shah Newaz was imprisoned for his crimes during the War of Liberation in 1971.

As he fell sick today the jail authority sent him to DMCH where the duty doctors announced his dead at 8:50pm after conducting some tests.

DMCH Police Outpost In-charge Inspector Bacchu Mia said the body was sent to the morgue for an autopsy.

According to the investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal, Shah Newaz along with four others had allegedly killed 22 people, raped a woman and destroyed 15 houses in Komlakanda and Durgapur upazila of the district in 1971.

With one of the deceased, the rest four were arrested in 2017 to stand trial for their crimes.

The tribunal however did not pass a verdict in the case.
