COLOMBO (News 1st); Trade Unions have warned that if the government does not reach a decision to go for a lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by Friday (20), all trade unions in the country will move into self-isolation.

Trade Union Activist Wasantha Samarasinghe said the government is maintaining COVID figures at a low, while in reality the situation is far worse.

‘The self-isolation of all trade unions will ensure that the health sector operates smoothly,’ he said.

Saman Ratnapriya, a nursing trade union chief said the people have understood the situation surrounding COVID-19, while the government has failed to understand it.

‘The decision required now is a scientific lockdown, where decisions are made based on science and facts,’ he said.

The Government must respect the views of the health sector and during a 10-day lockdown Sri Lanka must close its borders, he added.

Ravi Kumudesh, another trade union leader said on Monday (23) trade unions will lockdown the country by force.

He called on the government to lock down the country, trace COVID patients and provide immediate treatment to the patients.
