This is how you can use potato to check if your table salt is adulterated or not

Recently, we shared a quick hack to check whether your green vegetables are adulterated or not (
read here). We all know that adulterated food is not good for the human body. Keeping the same in view, FSSAI has started a series on Twitter called #DetectingFoodAdulterants. The latest food item that they have talked about is ‘Salt’.

Salt is the most important and basic seasoning used in the kitchen and hence it is very important to be sure of its purity. Rich in sodium chloride, this seasoning is loaded with health benefits as well. However, excess salt may cause several health issues too.

As per the 43-second video shared by FSSAI, there is a simple way to check the purity of the iodized white salt that we use at home. The tweet reads, “Is your iodized salt adulterated with common salt?” Take a look at the video:

5 steps to check the purity of table salt:

1. Take a potato and cut it into 2 pieces.

2. Apply the samples of salt on the cut surfaces and wait for a minute.

3. Add 2 drops of lemon juice to both samples.

4. The potato does not change colour because of double fortified salt.

5. Adulterated iodized salt makes the potato turn blue.

Isn’t it simple and easy to check the purity of your salt? Try it and share your feedback in the comment section.
