The Good Place: Series Finale Leaves Fans Emotional

Like all good things, even The Good Place has come to an end. The much-loved fantasy comedy series premiered in 2016 on NBC and has now finally wrapped up after four long years. Starring Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, The Good Place focused on her life as she wakes up in the afterlife and is introduced by Michael, played by Ted Danson, to “The Good Place”, a Heaven-like utopia that he has designed as a reward for her righteous life. However, she soon realizes that she was sent there by mistake and must hide her morally imperfect behavior while trying to become a better and more ethical person. Ever since its inception, the show has received critical acclaim for its writing, acting, originality, setting, and tone. In addition, the first season’s twist ending and the show’s exploration and creative use of ethics and philosophy have been positively received. But as the show ended, social media – like always – erupted in nothing but praises for the series finale. Here are some of the best reactions:

One user wrote: “Man this episode of The Good Place is so meta, just like Eleanor doesn’t want anyone to exit The Good Place, we humans don’t want the show to end. In the end the lesson is we may want an unlimited amount of a good thing but that’s not possible.”

Another added: “The Good Place ended tonight and it was a very emotional finale for someone who’s followed it since Season 1. I’m glad it’s over since it secures it forever as a phenomenal series. A rare 10/10 that I would suggest to anyone.”

One shared: “I’m 6 minutes into the good place finale and I’m stopping right there because I spent an hour doing my makeup today and I am not about to cry it off.”

Another commented: “I can honestly say The Good Place finale is one of the best TV experiences I’ve had in a very long time. You feel like, as the audience, you are a part of the Good place crew and yet also madly aware you are not and have no idea what to expect. I feel at peace and sad. Well done.”

One shared: “Honestly this finale was beyond perfect – it was emotional and beautiful with a small twist at the end which wrapped up everything so perfectly. I love The Good Place so much, thank you so much for all the wonderful memories these past 3 years.”

Another tweeted: “I really love The Good Place. And even though I can’t watch the finale until tomorrow, I want to state that amidst a sea of butt jokes and hilarious digs at Florida I genuinely learned to be a more ethical person because of this show. I will miss it dearly.”

One wrote: “After watching the final episode of the good place, i can easily say that i have never felt more satisfied with the ending of a show than i have for the good place. Everything felt wrapped up so neatly, and the respective fate of each character fit them so well. Wow. A lot of fictional works don’t know when to let go of the story, and they end up making the mistake of continuing when it’s time to put that story to rest. But The Good Place? The Good Place knew exactly when to let go. And really, it’s fitting. Because so much of that final episode was about knowing when to let go! Of finding that state of contentment, where you’re finally ready to part with something for the final time. As the characters part away from each other to that mysterious unknown, we too find ourselves reaching a point where we’re ready to part with the characters and their stories as well.”

Another added: “Even in a sitcom. An amazingly original, incredibly smart one such as The Good Place, which aired its finale last night. I loved this series and its characters, and spent much of the finale in tears. ‘Picture a wave in the ocean: you can see it measure it, its height, the way the sunlight refracts… and then it crashes on the shore and then it’s gone. But the water is still there. The wave was just a different way for the water to be for a little while. That’s one conception of death for a Buddhist. The wave returns to the ocean, where it came from, and where it’s supposed to be.’ Beautiful simplicity. I recommend this series to everyone.”

One tweeted: “I thought I was going to leave The Goof Place, sobbing on the floor. I did cry but I really left this show with such a feeling of peace, like everything’s okay. I learned so much from this show and it feels like the end of an era. Goodbye, The Good Place!”

Another shared: “I love The Good Place and it’s one of my favorite TV Shows and I’m absolutely heartbroken that it’s ending but I am so happy that the writers have decided not to prolong the show just because it’s successful!”

One commented: “Not-too-spoilery Good Place thought: the final door is a metaphor for a series realizing that it’s told its story and ending on its own terms even though its fans want more of it.”

Another said: “Don’t think there’ll ever be a show like The Good Place touching on existentialism and basic morality in such a relatable and meaningful way. Perfect ending imo. Also Ted Danson is and will always be bae.”
