Colombo (News 1st): In a country where authorities create illusions about providing tabs for school children, this is the story of a group of students who are looking for a safe place to study.
This building of the Dehiwatta Maha Vidyalaya in Trincomalee looks like it has been destroyed by the war. Even today more than 180 students study in this dilapidated building because they know that the only path to success is education.
The school was opened in 1954 and this building is as old as the school. The building remains in the same state due to the negligence of the authorities.
The step-motherly treatment towards these children by not just the bureaucrats but also the politicos has created a sense of displeasure towards the political hierarchy from rural community representatives.
UNP Pradeshiya Member Sugath Ramanayaka said;
“Look at this, it peels off when you touch it. if these fall on the children we as the rural community representatives are helpless. We came to these positions promising that we will repair these. If we can’t repair this, there is no use of us being in these posts. As a member of the government, I strongly and kindly ask the government to stop fooling around and utilize the government funds on things like this.”
These children risk their lives studying in this dilapidated building to make their poor parents’ dream a reality. Isn’t it high time the Education officials draw their attention to important matters like this?
