School teacher pushed off running bus by transport worker over fare

A transport worker allegedly pushed a school teacher off a running bus, which subsequently ran him over — leaving him critically injured following an altercation over fare in Chattogram city’s Station Road area Saturday morning.

Police are yet to arrest the accused bus helper and driver till filling this report last night.

The injured, Rahmat Ullah, is an assistant teacher of Habibullah Government Primary School at Panchlaish area, reports our Chattogram staff correspondent quoting Mohammad Nezam Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station.

Quoting witnesses and colleagues, OC Nezam Uddin said Rahmat Ullah boarded a New Market bound bus yesterday morning, coming from Oxygen area, to go to Sadarghat.

An altercation ensued between the bus helper and the teacher as the former was charging extra fare, the OC said, adding that at one point, Rahmat asked to stop the bus at Battali area but the driver did not comply.

“When the bus reached Station Road area, the helper pushed him off from the running vehicle and Rahmat was run over,” added the OC.

Locals rescued the teacher and sent him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.

The police officer said locals have also seized the bus but the driver and the helper managed to flee.

Rahmat sustained critical injuries in his leg, said the on-duty doctor of CMCH.

Police were trying to arrest the helper and the driver, he added.

Earlier, police arrested a bus driver and helper after the transport workers kicked a passenger off at Tigerpass area over altercation for charging extra fare.
