Paul Wesley, who starred in the popular fantasy drama The Vampire Diaries from 2009 to 2017 alongside Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, captured the hearts of many. The show revolves around Elena (played by Nina Dobrev) as she navigates a complicated love triangle with two vampire brothers (portrayed by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder) in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, while facing various dangers and challenges. Although the chemistry between Paul and Nina was well-received by the audience, it may come as a surprise that Paul had intentionally ignored his co-star before their auditions as a strategy to enhance their on-screen chemistry.

In a recent podcast interview, Paul said, “I had a real specific approach. Nina, who was already cast as the lead, was there, and everybody in that audition room during that process was kissing her ass because she was in the hallways. Everyone was going up to her and saying hi. And I was like, ‘F—k that. I’m not going to look her in the eye, and I’m also not going to introduce myself. I’m just gonna sit in the corner.’”

Paul Wesley revealed that he got the inspiration for his action from how his and Nina’s story began in The Vampire Diaries. He clarified that he didn’t do it to avoid being impolite but because their characters were not supposed to know each other in the scene. He noted, “It’s supposed to be a mystery. We were supposed to meet for the first time. We were supposed to meet at that exact moment.” Hence, he wanted the audition moment to be unique, where Nina could get to know him, staying true to the storyline.

The actor revealed that his initial acting method caused Nina Dobrev to have a negative first impression of him. He explained that Nina still remembers the incident when she attempted to introduce herself, but he ignored her, leading her to believe he was arrogant. Recounting his audition, the actor described it as a magical moment that was felt by everyone present, including the studio executives, which ultimately helped him secure the role.
