Mum launches new Hijab sports range

Inspired by her two teenage daughters who are heavily into sports, a mum has created and launched her own Hijab sports headscarf.

Nazira Bemath says her journey began when one of Naz’s daughters (Malaika) who is a keen athlete who told her mum that some of her friends would not join her or put any effort  into schools sports activities because they felt uncomfortable wearing their normal hijabs during PE classes.

Malaika’s girlfriends complained about their daily hijab’s getting in the way of the faces whilst playing sport and that their hijabs made them feel hot and sweaty.

Nazira and her daughters set about researching sports hijabs and ‘Hijab Active’ was born.

The specially designed sports Hijabs were made and designed by another mum and friend, Rozeenah Baureek, a fashion designer by profession.

Walthamstow School for Girls are piloting the scheme as part of PE Kit.

Nazira of Hijab Active said, “As a Muslim woman myself I totally understand the importance of hijab for young girls who observe it, however it seems to be hindering so many potentially brilliant young sports women of the future, who don’t have many options in terms of sports hijabs.

“As a mother of two young girls who are extremely sporty I felt I needed to do something about it and what better way,  to provide from school age an affordable sports designed hijab that would eliminate the issues these girls are facing with their ‘normal’ hijabs and therefore encourage more hijab wearing girls to participate in sport”.

The Hijabs retail at £12.99 and to find out more you can also view @iamhijabactive on Instagram.
