Man beaten to death on “theft suspicion” in Dhaka’s Demra

A man was beaten to death, reportedly on theft suspicion, in Dhaka’s Demra area early today.

The deceased was identified as Rakibur Rahman (35), a resident of Bamail area in Demra.

Shafiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Demra Police Station, said some workers of an under-construction building at Badsha Mia Road area beat the man up, suspecting him to be a thief.

With critical injures, he was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 11:00am, he said.

Police being informed by a call at 999 rushed there and detained two persons, the OC said.

Deceased’s nephew Zubair Ali said, “My uncle did not have a job…He left home last night and we came to know about his death in the morning.”

“Some workers beat him up suspecting him to be a thief. They also hit his head with a brick,” he said.

The body was sent to hospital morgue for autopsy.
