Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) has detained a kabiraj (rural herbal medicine practitioner) from Bathua area of Hathhazari upazila in Chattogram for allegedly raping a woman in the name of providing treatment.
The elite force said this in a press statement issued today, undersignd by Md Nurul Absar, senior assistant director (media) of Rab-7.
The detainee was identified as Mohammad Ali Prakash alias Dera Baba Ali (62), a rural kabiraj who has long been involved in extorting money from people through fraudulent activities, the Rab statement said.
The victim is the wife of an expatriate. She went to the kabiraj based on neighbours’ advice to seek remedy regarding her husband not communicating with her and not sending money for several months, the statement read.
Mohammad Ali took a total of Tk 10,000 from the woman during two visits in exchange for amulets and “water with enchantment”. After these did not bring any results, the woman contacted him again, and he told her to visit again on January 22.
After she went to visit him on January 22, Mohammad Ali gave her some more “water with enchantment” to drink, after which she fell unconscious. Later when she regained consciousness, he sent her home on a rickshaw. After reaching home, she realised she was raped. She went to the kabiraj again to ask him in this regard but found no one there. Then she found a Rab patrol car on the way and informed them in this connection, the statement also read.
Rab-7 personnel then conducted a drive to nab the kabiraj, Nurul Absar said, adding that he admitted to the crime, adding that he was later handed over to police and legal steps in this connection were underway.
