COLOMBO (News 1st): All employees travelling to work on Monday, in areas in which the curfew is in effect, should be in possession of an identity card or any other document confirming their employment, police said.

“It is mandatory for employees to produce an e-mail, SMS, or any other electronic document issued by companies permitting them to report to work,” DIG Ajith Rohana, who heads the legal range noted.

The curfew will be lifted in 21 districts on Monday but will continue to be in effect in the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam districts, which have been identified as high-risk zones for the spread of the coronavirus.

However, state and private sectors have been permitted to resume operations even during the curfew.

State sector employees can commute to work before 8:30 am, while private-sector employees can travel between 8:30 am and 10 am, DIG Rohana said, citing it as a move to curb traffic congestion.

Further, state employees have been advised to travel back home between 3 pm and 4 pm, and private sector employees between 4 pm and 5 pm.

“Three-wheelers with a maximum of two passengers and hired cabs with a maximum of three passengers can be used to travel to work,” DIG Rohana noted.

However, he strictly warned the public from travelling long distances for personal reasons.

“People can walk to pharmacies and grocery stores to purchase essential items based on the last digit of the National Identity Card (NIC) number.”

Those with 1 or 2 as the final digit on the NIC can leave their homes on Monday, 3 or 4 on Tuesday, 5 or 6 on Wednesday, 7 or 8 on Thursday, and 9 or 0 on Friday.

DIG Rohana added that salons and beauty parlours can resume operations upon receiving approval from the medical officer of health in their respective areas.

Hotels, tea boutique, markets, gyms, and clubs will not be allowed to resume operations when the curfew is lifted in 21 districts tomorrow.

“Online food delivery services can continue to operate as usual,” the DIG told reporters.
