The mother of a freedom fighter has been waiting for her son for 50 years in an old house adjacent to Government Women’s College in Pirojpur city.

After he was captured, the Pakistani army asked him to say “Pakistan Zindabad” but instead he shouted “Joy Bangla”. That earned him a rod in his skull with a Pakistani flag attached.

Martyred Omar’s mother Kulsum Begum still cannot come to terms with the fact that her son gave his life for the freedom of the country. For the last 50 years, she has kept the front door of the house open, hoping her son might return one day.

Omar’s younger sister Salma Rahman Happy spoke to The Daily Star about her brother’s supreme sacrifice for his country in today’s Star Special.
