In a post, the person with the username “NotBen_2” said they made tomato sauce last month following the same recipe they always do, but this time around had some fresh mint lying around. “So I minced up a few leaves, not a whole lot, I think 4 small leaves, and threw’em in with my normal seasoning,” the user said. The Redditor then let it simmer for three hours.

The additional layer of flavour the sauce had developed was “hard to describe”, said the person. It gave the sauce an earthy flavour, like a cool refreshing yet very minor sensation that balances out the acidity of the tomatoes, the user added.

Mint leaves are used globally to prepare chutneys, tea and detox drinks. They are very versatile and can even be just sprinkled over a dish for aroma. Besides, they also have several health benefits. They instantly curb stomach woes. Often when we complain about stomach ache, we are given a few drops of “pudin hara” because mint leaves are anti-inflammatory and help relieve indigestion. Rich in phosphorus, calcium and Vitamins C, D, E and A, they help improve the body’s immune system and protect cells from any damage.

Mint leaves also contain rosmarinic acid, a powerful antioxidant agent which blocks allergy-producing compounds thus helping people suffering from allergies and asthma.

So, now you know what to add to your tomato sauce next time you are in the mood to prepare some.
