Belly fat is also called stubborn fat. Belly fat can be of two types – subcutaneous fat (layer beneath the skin) and visceral fat (around the muscles and around abdominal organs). Visceral fat is considered dangerous because it predisposes you at a risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and other life-threatening disorders. Visceral fat can also heighten one’s risk of developing insulin resistance. This bulge refuses to budge even with intense exercise and dieting, and that’s why we all call it “stubborn” because no matter what you do, the fat on the belly remains.
Thigh fat is majorly subcutaneous fat (deposits just beneath the skin) and do not have much health risk attached to it.
Both belly and thigh fat are considered stubborn, and happen due to the same reason – excessive calories through the diet and lack of physical activity. But through research and scientific studies, it has been proven that abdominal fat or belly fat is much harder to shed and that’s because there are more alpha-2 receptors in belly fat cells. There are two types of receptors in fat cells – alpha 2 and beta 2. Alpha-2 receptors do not respond that well to lipolysis whereas beta-2 receptor cells are more available to be mobilized and shift for fat burning. Compared to belly fat, there are less number of alpha-2 receptor fat cells in thigh fat.
Also, blood circulation improves fat burning and it’s easier to target thigh fat with improved blood circulation through exercise.
So, summing up, belly fat with a higher amount of alpha-2 receptors in the fat cells is harder to lose because they are more resistant to the process of lipolysis than thigh fat, and also thigh fat can mobilized by improving blood circulation and exercise.
