His strategy was going well and he managed to dodge law enforcers for seven years. He even started earning through singing baul songs and got married.

But his appearance as a baul in the song “Bhanga tori chhera paal” five years ago, led to him being identified and eventually, getting arrested, Khandaker Al Moin, Rab’s legal and media wing director, said.

Rab started investigation after a man informed six months ago that that baul in the music video looks like the fugitive killer of Mahmudul Hasan Bidyut (in 2001), he told a press conference today.

A team of Rab-3 arrested him last night from Bhairab upazila in Kishoreganj, Moin said.

“He took cover as a baul as he can sing, and he thought he could earn some money this way too… He thought he would not be identified in this new look,” the Rab official said.

Helal used to live near Narayanganj rail station five years ago when the director of the music video offered him to appear in the video while filming there, the Rab official said.

The music video was widely viewed on social media which helped in him being identified, he said.

Helal, along with three others, was convicted in a case filed with Bogura Sadar Police Station for stabbing Bidyut to death. Besides, he was an FIR named accused in Bishnu killing in 1997 and a charge-sheeted accused in a case over killing one Rabiul Islam in 2006.

Helal was arrested in a case for stealing but got bail in 2015 when he was awarded life term in Bidyut killing case.

He then left Bogura and arrived at Kamalapur Railway Station. Later, he went to Chattogram and started staying at a shine there. Months later, he moved to Hazrat Shahjalal’s Shrine in Sylhet. Eventually, he went to Narayanganj Rail Station, the Rab official said.

He has been staying in Kishorganj for the last five years, after marrying a woman there.

Helal studied up to class eight and started working as a grocer. But he later got involved in criminal activities including murder. He never communicated with his family members in Bogura after he absconded.
