American Airlines Passenger Posts Footage of Crowded Plane

Passengers traveling with American Airlines are required to wear masks beginning May 11 as airlines strive to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Airlines have implemented similar safety policies to reduce the potential spread of the coronavirus on flights, including reduced occupancy to allow for space between passengers, as lockdowns ease. Passengers have shared footage on social media to challenge the lack of social distancing on some flights in the US. This video shows a crowded flight from Miami to New York City on Friday, May 8, shared by passenger Carlos Vera. In a statement to Storyful, American Airlines said it will limit the number of passengers on each aircraft on flights through May 31. “As part of this limit, American will not assign 50 percent of main cabin middle seats or seats near flight attendant jump seats on every flight, and will only use those middle seats when necessary.” American Airlines said gate agents “will also continue to reassign seats to create more space between customers or to accommodate families who need to be seated together,” adding that customers, once on board, can move to another seat if available, as long as there aren’t any aircraft weight or balance restrictions.
