Netflix has just added a coming-of-age dramedy, Never Have I Ever, created by Mindy Kaling. The new high school series tells the story of a nerdy Indian-American girl Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) based in Sherman Oaks, California. Devi has goals similar to those of many of her peers: to be popular and hot, and to find a boyfriend. During her freshman year, she is in a wheelchair and her dad passes away. So Devi comes up with a plan to have a good sophomore year, which is where the ten-episode series begins. The show has been receiving a good response from the audience for its commentary on desi culture and its entertainment value. Check out some of the latest social media reactions below
“Aunties are older Indian women who have no blood relationship to you, but are allowed to have opinions about your life and all your shortcomings. And you have to be nice to them because you’re Indian”

#NeverHaveIEver is the best show on Netflix 100%
The cast is so likable and relatable all at the same time.
It handles grief, repression, pain, while also still being a funny a heartfelt show.
This is the show we all have been waiting for.

The series has received several positive reviews for its focus on the modern, first-generation Indian-American teenage girl and her concerns, a perspective largely missing from American television. Adrian Horton wrote in The Guardian, “It is refreshing, and exciting, to see someone like Devi given the Fleabag treatment: space to avoid grief by misbehaving, an exploration of the bitter pills of growing up with a darkly comic touch.”
Meanwhile, in an interview with Priya Arora for The New York Times, Mindy Kaling said, “Those people who watch the show, particularly young Indian-American women, are the people that I want to like it the most. And they’re the ones that are going to be the toughest on me. So it’s one of the biggest things I care about now as an artist.”
